Why Your E-liquid Changes Colour and Why It Isn't Bad

Posted by owen Li on

If you have ever kept a bottle of e-liquid for a long time, you may have noticed how it changes colour over time. While this might send you into panic mode, know that this change does not mean that the juice has dropped in quality. You can continue enjoying its flavour and the vaping experience it provides as you would a fresh bottle of e-liquid.

That being said, you might still wonder what the change in colour means. This change can be due to several things, which we will go over below.

What caused the colour to change?

An e-liquid can change colour even if you have never opened the bottle This is due to the ingredients inside the juice undergoing oxidation. E-liquids that contain nicotine are much more prone to this because it is a reactive substance. That said, oxidation happens much quicker once the liquid is exposed to air, light, or heat.

There are other causes of colour changes as well. For instance, e-liquids with a high amount of VG (vegetable glycerin) tend to "caramelize" especially around the coils. That is because VG is sweet and much thicker than PG (propylene glycol) and is prone to "burning." This caramelization turns the substance into a dark goo, which can stain even fresh e-liquid. In other words, if you were to mix caramelized juice with clear e-liquids, that liquid is going to turn dark as well.

Is oxidation dangerous?

Oxidation is a harmless reaction that happens naturally. It does not alter the liquid's taste or quality, meaning that oxidised juice is still good. Simply put, it is an aesthetic change that does nothing more than turn your e-liquid into a darker substance.

If you discover that your fresh bottle of e-juice has turned dark, you do not have to throw it away. You can still enjoy vaping it as much as a fresh bottle of e-liquid.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about caramelization.

Is caramelization bad?

Caramelization is not technically bad. It does not turn the e-liquid into a toxic substance that can harm you. However, what it does do is alter the taste of the liquid. This can create an adverse vaping experience that may cause you to think your bottle of e-liquid has gone bad.

For that reason, you must clean your tank and atomizer thoroughly before filling it back up. Any residue left can stain a fresh pouring of e-liquid, hurting your vaping experience. That being said, caramelization does nothing more than changing the taste.

If you want to prevent your e-juice from changing colour at all, we highly recommend opting for nicotine-free, high PG e-liquids. Without the nicotine and high ratio of VG, the e-liquid's tendency to change colour is minimal.

However, if you want to continue using high-VG or nicotine e-liquids, be sure to store them in a dark, cool place. While it will not stop the colour-changing process, it will slow it down.

Also, do not forget to clean your atomizers and tanks if you are planning to refill it. That way, you can enjoy fresh e-liquid without tasting the caramelized VG from the previous vaping session.
